Livestock: ATTRA - National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service

ATTRA (Appropriate Technology Transfer to Rural Areas) is the national sustainable agriculture information service, which serves to complement the Cooperative Extension Service. ATTRA is federally funded and is run by a non-profit based in Montana, the National Center for Appropriate Technology. In operation for the past 20 years, ATTRA serves farmers and educators all over the nation. They do this through a toll-free hotline, publications available through the hotline and on-line at the ATTRA website (www.attra.ncat.org), and through speaking and providing materials at conferences. ATTRA operates at several locations, including right here in our region; the sheep and goat specialists (Linda Coffey and Margo Hale) are housed at 207 West Center Street, Fayetteville, Arkansas!

This section of the ATTRA Website http://attra.ncat.org/livestock.html#Hogs pertains to sheep and goats. Go to www.attra.ncat.org (the home page) and explore other publications, too, including many about grazing and pasture management. Producers can call ATTRA specialists by dialing 800-346-9140.

Meat Yield Calculator

The University of Vermont has developed a “meat yield calculator, so you can calculate the expected hot carcass weight and final "retail" yield for your beef, sheep, and hogs. You will need the animal's live weight (or an estimate of it), the dressing percentage, and cutting yield.

You can also calculate what your customer will pay in total dollars and also in terms of pounds of meat received. You will need to know your slaughter fee, cut and wrap cost, and other fees, such as offal disposal fee.
